Scratching the surface. There were two processes involved in the making of this work. Firstly, my own personal journey to explore the idea of an infinite space, a place of potential – ‘a leap in the dark’. I wanted to create a piece that in its scale would relate directly to the human body – to make an image which would either draw the viewer in or make them feel uneasy, depending on their individual interpretation. In this digital age I could have taken photos of the objects, digitally removed their interiors and made large print outs. But the physicality of drawing (the texture of paper and graphite, the sound of pencil on paper and the length of time spent working at a pace somewhat removed from my other work practice) means that for me, this process still holds a
particular kind of magic. |

In the paintings exhibited, the material of their construction is always present. Hardboard, primer, nails and screws are exposed; masking tape is sometimes left in place. This exposure of the ‘nuts and bolts’ of her trade acts to reveal the making process, ‘this is what I am’ they seem to say.
Whateley’s drawings and paintings are predominantly concerned with line. Within the paintings themselves, the lines can appear as drips or staccato marks that are sometimes thickly layered or singular. The line acts to refer the painting back to drawing, whilst the physical presence of the paint acknowledges both the material and historical weight of the medium. |

My current art practice explores the media of both installation and more recently video/film. These works arrive through rigorous and methodical alterations into the notions of PROCESS, process as both the investigation into physical practice and that of cognitive decision-making. In particular elements within the work ‘Nebular (Uma Thurman)’ there denotes an importance towards the physicality of material and its transformation.
I often use the particular potency of red and white as an on-going rhythm.
These motifs have become increasingly established as signifiers of both the seductive and the repellent. The crimson denotes a wound delivered to flesh, while the white signifies its cauterization or purification; yet red also denotes the innocence of valentine love, jejune candy sticks rather than the barber’s pole.
